To become a music composer, the most important qualifications are excellent musical ability, a deep and broad knowledge of music theory, and creativity. Many composers attend a music school or a music conservatory where they learn composition, music theory, and the other elements of writing music. They may also study a specific instrument, often the piano. However, formal training is not a strict prerequisite to work as a composer, and many composers may have little formal experience. Additional skills you need include knowledge of media, electronic musical equipment, and exceptional communication.
A composer is someone who writes music professionally. Often, they use special forms of musical notation to create musical scores, which musicians use to perform the pieces. Their compositions often feature instructions for multiple instruments or vocal ranges and denote important aspects of a song, like melody, chords, and tempo. They may write music for orchestras, bands, choirs, ensembles, or solo artists. Sometimes, multiple composers work together to write a piece of music, like popular music bands that write original pieces.
As a music composer, you write original music, such as scores for film or TV shows, compositions for bands or orchestras to perform, or for a solo artist. Your duties are to conceptualize and score all the parts of a song, including melodies and harmonies, rhythm, and structure, and write the music for however many instruments or voices you decide to use for a given song or arrangement. If you work in entertainment, you work closely with directors, often after the film has been shot. Your responsibilities are to analyze the visual elements, structure, and story and develop music to complement it.
